Meet New Mexico's State Lead Ambassador

Teresa Gomez

Teresa is New Mexico's new State Lead Ambassador. She is an ovarian cancer survivor and has dedicated her time as a volunteer for ACS-CAN since 2015. In addition to her work with ACS CAN, Teresa has been involved in leadership positions in various policy arenas. She is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Isleta and has been a life-long resident of New Mexico. Teresa was appointed to serve on the NM Medical Insurance Exchange Board in 2013 and also serves on the NM Medical Insurance Pool Board which oversees programs to individuals with high-cost medical conditions, ensuring access to affordable health insurance. Teresa has dedicated her career to serving Tribes and advocating for issues affecting American Indians.

Why are you a cancer advocate?

"I am an ACS CAN volunteer and cancer advocate because I want more people to be informed about cancer and its devastating effects. As an Ovarian Cancer Survivor that was diagnosed at a late stage, I am committed to raising awareness about the importance of early detection and to advocate for the availability of resources for those who have been diagnosed with cancer. I volunteer with ACS CAN because I believe in advocating for cancer research, prevention, and education."

What is your favorite memory from your time as an ACS CAN volunteer?

"I attended my first Lights of Hope event in September 2018 and was so impressed with the event.  There was so much energy, passion, and commitment from hundreds of ACS CAN volunteers from across the country.  Experiencing that type of spirited dialogue and activity motivated me to continue my efforts to advocate for policy that will benefit people who have been touched by cancer."

What is your proudest accomplishment as an ACS CAN volunteer?

"I began volunteering with ACS CAN soon after I was asked to serve on a panel for the NM Palliative Care Summit.  Since that time I have served as the ACT Lead and now the State Lead Ambassador.  I am so humbled to have been chosen to serve as NM’s SLA.  As NM’s SLA, I will have the opportunity to speak from the perspective of a survivor as well as an advocate for all of my friends and family who have been impacted by cancer.  Serving as NM’s SLA is an enormous responsibility because we are the voice for those who may not be able to speak out."
