It’s Time to Reduce the Toll of Tobacco on Connecticut

For years, Connecticut has been taking money away from programs to educate kids about the dangers of tobacco products, and away from programs to help people who use tobacco quit. This has left Connecticut ranked last when it comes to state spending on tobacco prevention.

  • Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death, claiming the lives of about 4,900 people in Connecticut each year.
  • The tobacco industry spends an estimated $55.5 million dollars each year marketing its deadly products in our state.
  • Currently 28.7 % of Connecticut high school students use tobacco.

It’s time for state lawmakers to stop the raids and restore Connecticut’s tobacco control program to its previous funding level of $12 million.
