ACS CAN Lauds Governor Carney for Enacting Tobacco 21

Governor Signed Bill as Cancer Survivors Brought Their Stories to State House

May 6, 2019

DOVER, DE, April 17, 2019 – Governor Carney today enacted a law that will prohibit the sale of tobacco products to those younger than 21.

The bill signing took place during Delaware Day at the Capitol, during which cancer survivors and caregivers met with state lawmakers to tell their stories and ask for support for cancer related programs

American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Delaware Government Relations Director Jeanne Chiquoine released the following statement:

“We thank Governor Carney for acting to save lives and protect health in Delaware. Given 95 percent of smokers start before 21, Tobacco 21 is a common-sense law. Keeping the tobacco industry away from our kids could protect them from a deadly addiction. We are thrilled to see Delaware is now one of the states to take this lifesaving action.

“Along with Governor Carney, we again thank bill sponsor Representative Minor-Brown and Senate Sponsors Townsend and DelCollo for their leadership on this legislation.”
